We already knew that the next wave of Hollywood blockbuster films will be in the next year, but it looks like we’re in for another big year of blockbuster movies coming out this year.
A new study out of the American Film Institute shows that movies released in 2018 are projected to gross around $2.4 billion worldwide, and that the year ahead will be a huge one.
That’s up from the $2 billion grossed in 2017 and the $1.9 billion that came in 2016.
That doesn’t include the $600 million that came out of Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War, or the $400 million that Universal made for Finding Dory in 2019.
The year ahead is shaping up to be a big year for films that are not superhero movies, but will have characters in them, whether that be a love story, a comedy, or a thriller.
And of course, it also has to be remembered that the 2018 crop is coming from a very different generation than the ones that came before, and they’re not as fond of superhero movies.
They’re not fans of Marvel movies, and some are even critical of them.
But overall, it’s a great year for cinema.
Here are the top 10 films to watch this year, as well as what they might mean for 2019.
10.
Interstellar (2015) If you’re into science fiction, Interstellar is definitely worth your time.
The film takes place in a time period that’s been largely ignored in the big-budget superhero movies coming our way, and it’s full of sci-fi elements.
It’s about an interstellar journey through space, and while the plot is somewhat predictable, the performances of Tom Hanks and Alicia Vikander are top notch.
This year, it will be releasing on Blu-ray and DVD, which should bring in a huge audience.
9.
Inception (2010) If anything, this is the movie that really got us hooked on the idea of artificial intelligence.
This movie has an intriguing story line, but its best moments come when the AI is played by Tom Cruise, who is a master of his craft.
And when the movie’s AI learns to speak, it becomes one of the best characters in cinema, so you can’t go wrong with this one.
It might not be the most original movie, but you’re going to love it. 8.
The Revenant (2014) The Revenger is one of those movies that really does have a certain sense of place to it.
You could probably argue that it’s more of a story about a group of hunters trying to find the elusive Revenant, a wolf who is trying to hunt the people who have killed his family.
The movie is set on a fictional island, but in real life, the islanders live in the wild, and the Revenant is a big threat to them.
The big problem is that he’s been hunted, and he’s only one of several packs that hunt the Revengers.
This is a pretty well-rounded, well-directed movie, with good performances from the likes of Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch.
7.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) The movie that finally put the big bad of the MCU in a Marvel movie has gotten a lot of attention this year thanks to its massive box office haul.
Thor’s first solo movie was a success, and Ragnarok will hopefully be no different.
The main character, Jane Foster, is a human who has to protect Asgard against Loki’s assault.
It will be interesting to see how the movie plays out, as this is set in the year before Ragnarok is set.
6.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017
